One of those concerts that I will never forget, such was the impression it made on me, was Pierre Boulez conducting Le Visage nuptial at the BBC Proms, maybe 15 years ago. What an immense sense of space he created with the hocketing crotales in Gravité (L’emmuré). This composition is still with me, seeping its way into my music time and again. I didn’t dream then that I would ever have the chance to share my music with Pierre Boulez, but his generosity of spirit – welcoming us young composers and conductors into his home and sharing his time and experience with us – has been a real and ongoing inspiration.

Winner of the LUCERNE FESTIVAL ACADEMY’s Composers Project, Christian Mason had the opportunity to consult closely with Pierre Boulez from 2011 to 2013 preparing his orchestral work “Isolarion: Rituals of Resonance,” which received its world premiere at the 2013 LUCERNE FESTIVAL.
