To mark the start of its residency at LUCERNE FESTIVAL, where the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra is celebrating its 70th anniversary, the Dutch star violinist Janine Jansen will play one of the most beautiful solo concertos of the 20th century: Béla Bartók’s First Violin Concerto, a portrait of the Hungarian virtuosa Stefi Geyer. Bartók was then passionately in love with this attractive and highly gifted musician, but she rejected him, never performed the work, and kept it under lock and key until her death. Why did the relationship between the composer and his muse fail?
a. Stefi thought the work was “unplayable” and an “unreasonable demand.”
b. Bartók began an affair with a cellist.
c. The couple got into an argument about how to perform the “Bartók pizzicato.”
d. The atheist Bartók wanted to discourage the deeply religious Stefi from following her faith.
e. Stefi wanted to insert a ten-minute-long cadenza into the second movement.
We are giving away three pairs of free tickets for this concert to those who can answer our music puzzle correctly and are chosen in the draw. Please send the letter corresponding to what you believe is the correct answer to the following address: firstname.lastname@example.org
